Heli Kaskinen (b. 1981) is a visual artist who works mainly with photography, object assemblages and words. Kaskinen’s works draw on self-reflection and often deal with themes of humanity, lived life and trauma from a humorous-philosophical perspective, using found materials and storytelling. In her work, she is interested in the relationship between the visible and the invisible, and what kind of story lies behind the visible. Her works are based on the idea of translation, and in her works, Kaskinen aims to translate found photographs and objects into a new perspective through humorous image interpretation. Humorous image interpretation is a method that she researches and develops in her artistic work.
Kaskinen graduated with a Master of Arts degree from Aalto University School of Art and Design in 2022 and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Academy of Fine Arts, Uniarts Helsinki in 2017. Her most recent exhibitions have been All that could happen, is (2023) at Galleria Becker, Jyväskylä, One Dot Rules Them All (2021) at Mikkeli Photo Center, Mikkeli and Photo Center Nykyaika, Tampere, and Meanwhile, On The Other Side (2019) at Photo Gallery Hippolyte, Helsinki. In addition, her works have also been exhibited in joint and group exhibitions both in Finland and abroad, in Austria, Germany and Denmark. During 2024–2026, Kaskinen will work with a 3-year state artist grant.
