Mika Kiviniemi’s exhibition A Proposal for Something That Could Be a Conversation consists of digital still images, videos and sounds. It explores the experience of interaction between human body and space – how the characteristics of space guide human behaviour and how one’s own actions can change the experience of space. Kiviniemi’s starting point is the idea of a conversation between space and the human body. His combinations of images and sounds taken from performative experiments are associative and intuitive propositions for comments a conversation like this could produce.
In addition to the visual, the exhibition explores space through sound: recorded in the spaces that appear in the images, sounds are played back sometimes unmodified, sometimes altered. The sounds form a commentary on the images and the video material of the exhibition. Kiviniemi is interested in peripheral sound coming from outside the space, how it affects the experience of the space and links it to places and phenomena outside it – the sound of a nearby motorway, for example; sounds from sources that are not inherent to the space.
The exhibition has received support from the Oulun Valistustalo fund.
