Christelle Mas (b.1984 in Paris, France) is a photographer and mixed media artist currently residing in Oulu, Finland. Christelle Mas’s creative process involves a fusion of artistic and scientific methodologies, using soft materials, installations, videos and photography. The selection for the visual artist of Oulunsalo Soi has been conducted in collaboration with Photo North.
Executive director of Photo North, Darja Zaitsev commented on Mas: “Working with various medias Christelle Mas examines the relations between humans and technology, scenarios of the future and interspecies relationships which makes her a topical artist. The exhibition in Oulunsalo Library expands the concept of photography and welcomes people to dive into the multidimensional, slightly humorous, utopia.”
Mas’ works often take the shape of a hybrid beings, proposing potential future scenarios in which newly adapted species thrive in our ever evolving and unknown environment. She frequently constructs captivating worlds where science and mythology, as well as the natural and artificial, are interwoven.
Mas has a Master of Arts degree from the University of Sorbonne in Paris, where she also earned a Bachelor Art degree in the philosophy of art. She has displayed her work in numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Finland and internationally (Switzerland, Belgium, Austria, Sweden, France, Germany, Estonia).
Oulunsalo Soi Chamber Music Festival is being held from 7th to 11th of August in Oulu region as part of Oulu August Festivals network. The Visual appearance of the festival is based on works of the visual artist of the year. This year’s program for the festival is published in May.
