Which historical events led to shelters becoming more common in the Nordic countries? What is the significance of population shelters today and what purposes can shelters have?
A public event will be held at the Makujen Paljetti cafe at Cultural Centre Valve on Saturday 20 January 2024 from 12:30 to 3 p.m., where civil protection as a phenomenon and civil protection as a concrete space will be discussed. The event is a part of the parallel program of the exhibition My shelter by artist Eriz Moreno, which is on display in the gallery of the Photo North – Northern photographic Centre.
During the event, we will get to know the My Shelter exhibition led by artist Eriz Moreno, followed by the history of Finnish civil defense at 1:00 p.m. – How did Finland become a superpower in civil defense? – writer and docent of political history, Ville Jalovaara, who wrote the book, lectured on the history and contemporary phenomena related to civil protection. The event ends at 2 p.m. with Urho Karppinen, the preparedness manager of the North Ostrobothnia rescue service, speaking on Protecting the population in the 2020s. Artist Eriz Moreno’s presentation tour is in English and Ville Jalovaara and Urho Karppinen’s speeches are in Finnish.
Docent of political history Ville Jalovaara (Helsinki, 1976 Helsinki) is a historical researcher from Helsinki and a docent of political history at the Faculty of Social History of the University of Turku. The special field of Jalovaara’s docentship is the study of social movements. He has published ten works dealing with the history of Finland from different perspectives. Ville Jalovaara’s latest work Helsinki 1944 – the battle for the capital (SKS 2023) deals with the major bombings of Helsinki in the spring of 1944. He has also looked at the history of Northern Finland in his study Bishop Wallimaa’s death – Partisan attack in Saariselkä 1943 (SKS 202), published in 2021. His research on the history of civil protection, Population Protection and the Cold War (Otava 2021), was carried out with the support of the Population Protection Foundation. Ville Jalovaara is also an active social influencer.
Urho Karppinen is acting director of the rescue service of Northern Ostrobothnia. contingency manager. He mainly works on preparing for the protection of the population as well as the rescue service’s own preparedness and contingency planning.
The artistic work of Eriz Moreno (Bilbao, Spain, 1982) focuses on historical-political contexts and their effects on the population or landscape. Moreno is interested in creating place-based works and has been awarded several grants and awards to realize his projects in Austria, Germany, Greece, Iran, Macau, Poland, Romania, Turkey, the United States, and the former Soviet and Yugoslav republics. His works have been presented by e.g. Bilbao Guggenheim Museum, Yerevan Museum of Contemporary Art, D21 Kunstraum Leipzig, Tampere Labor Museum Werstas, Salamanca’s Domus Artium 2002 Museum, Helsinki Civil Protection Museum and Helsinki Museum. His notable publications include Projekt Beton (2013) and Berlin (America) (2022). Eriz Moreno’s exhibition “My shelter” can be seen in the gallery of Photo North until February 4, 2024.
